How You Can Help After the Nepal Earthquake
Community Foundation of Western Nevada refers you to two funds (and a short list) to help in Nepal
On Saturday, April 25th, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal in an area between the capital city of Kathmandu and the city of Pokhara. With more than 4,400 people confirmed dead and 8,000 injured at this time, the relief work in affected regions involves complex and overwhelming challenges. If you are wondering how you can help we know two organizations that will put your generosity to good use.
Soroptimist International of Truckee Meadows Nepal Fund- Earthquake Relief
Soroptimist International of Truckee Meadows (SITM) club has been involved in helping villagers living in Thulipokhari, Nepal for 15 years. Members have visited the village and a strong network of friends and contacts is maintained. SITM is encouraging and accepting relief donations to the SITM IGU Nepal Fund Earthquake Relief at the Community Foundation. In one district in the village every occupied home was destroyed. Short term aid will include among other things items such as tents, blankets, food, water, and clothes. Long term aid will include more permanent programs such as assistance with rebuilding their homes and replanting their crops and securing more livestock. Because the local Soroptimist Club has personal contact with the school counsel and the village elders and is an all-volunteer non-profit organization, all of the aid donations will go to help the people of the region without reduction for administrative costs.

Center for Disaster Philanthropy
In addition to the Soroptimist Fund at the Community Foundation we can refer you to the compiled information from the Center for Disaster Philanthropy. As they do whenever a major disaster strikes, the Center for Disaster Philanthropy puts all its energy and resources at the service of donors who want to know how their giving can make a long-term impact.
Among the Center for Disaster Philanthropy’s current activities:
- A robust information page about what has been learned about the earthquake and how international nongovernment agencies and donors are responding.
- Because we have learned from past disasters such as Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy, the Typhoon Haiyan and the South Asian Tsunami, that it will take many years for Nepal to fully recover, the Center for Disaster Philanthropy has activated a Nepal Earthquake Recovery Fund. Money raised will support medium- and long-term rebuilding and recovery.
