2019 Community Fund Grant Goes to Ridge House
Rise and Grind Wellness and Nutrition Program at The Ridge House Helped by Community Fund Grant.
The Rise and Grind Program at the Ridge House will further increase clients' chances for a successful recovery from substance use disorders and behavioral health issues. The participants in the Ridge House Nutrition and Wellness Program will be for all clients living at Ridge House’s seven residential and transitional facilities and/or receiving outpatient services. In 2018, 735 clients were provided programming; 488 men and 247 women. Many clients have co-occurring mental health issues combined with their substance use disorder which makes it even more important to ensure they are getting as much support and information on self-care as possible. The “Rise and Grind” curriculum is a 6-week training offered by Grant Denton, Peer Recovery Specialist and Certified Personal Trainer (CPT), and Jacqueline Wickens who has a BS in nutrition with a specialization in dietetics from the University of Nevada, Reno. The training has five modules: 1. The Role of Nutrition in Recovery 2. Basic Nutrition in Recovery 3. The Role of Exercise in Recovery 4. Basic Exercise in Recovery 5. Budgeting and Label Reading Every module has a group discussion, worksheets, and an exam (which everyone is supported in passing). Activities include food journaling, food prepping, and creating healthy menus specific to each client. Clients are also assisted in developing workout regimens specific to their abilities and interests. Recovery is a lifelong journey and there is no “finish line”. Substance use disorders cannot be “cured” but individuals can, and do achieve long-term recovery, contentment and live remarkably successful lives. The information clients will receive regarding nutrition and exercise can benefit them for the rest of their lives and positively impact the well-being of their children which may help to break the multi-generational cycle of addiction and illness.
