Virtual Philanthropy Leaders Summit - 2020 Ideas in Action

The Community Foundation of Western Nevada keeps our board, staff, fundholders, and community informed and engaged in effective philanthropy through ongoing communication.  My weekly emails, along with our monthly eNewsletter, Community Matters reach out with timely information related to giving. Program Officers Lyndsey Crossley and Lauren Renda offer Community Foundation fundholders personalized services and in-depth information to further explore fundholders' interests and charitable goals.

Today I am glad to share information about the Reno Philanthropy Leaders Summit on Friday, Sept. 18th, from 9:00 AM to 11:15 AM, hosted by the Moonridge Group.

The Community Foundation has helped engage presenters for this event for several years and I feel they have put together an outstanding program for corporate funders and family foundations, along with local, statewide, and national philanthropists. You are invited to participate and learn about the latest trends and best practices in giving.

This year’s Keynote Speaker is Sal Khan, the founder of Khan Academy, a nonprofit organization with the mission of providing a free, world-class education for anyone anywhere.

The Khan Academy has more than 106 million registered users from around the world, the content and mastery learning platform has been localized into more than 40 languages.  Khan will talk about what he has learned since the Khan Academy began in 2005, how philanthropy has transformed his efforts, leveraging technology and metrics to achieve success.

Also speaking is Emary Aronson and Susan Sack from Robin Hood.

Robin Hood is known for its crisis philanthropy expertise. Robin Hood has been finding and creating the most impactful and scalable solutions to lift families out of poverty in New York City for over 30 years. Many leading philanthropists and civic leaders contact Robin Hood when a crisis occurs. Aronson, Chief Knowledge Officer and Senior Advisor to the CEO, manages the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which was originally organized to address the needs of those affected by 9/11. It has since been activated after Superstorm Sandy, and about six months after COVID-19 to support low-income New Yorkers directly affected by the pandemic.  Sack, Managing Director of Real Estate, developed Robin Hood’s capital grant initiative to provide funding and technical advice to community partners for their real estate needs. To date, the initiative has helped build, lease, and renovate more than 2 million square feet of space for programs funded by Robin Hood.

The Virtual Philanthropy Summit will feature an impressive lineup of Nevadan Philanthropic and Business leaders.

Jeremy Aguero, Principal Analyst at Applied Analysis, will report on the landscape of corporate philanthropy in Nevada while also providing economic updates through the lens of the COVID-19 pandemic. Phil Satre, Chairman of the Board of Wynn Resorts, Ltd., and Community Foundation fundholder, will share how his philanthropy has evolved in 2020 personally, professionally, and as a member of the Governor’s COVID-19 Task Force. See the Virtual Philanthropy Summit website for the impressive full speaker roster.
