Northern Nevada Literacy Council Receives 2020 Community Fund Grant
Family Reading Program at the Northern Nevada Literacy Council Supported by a 2019 Community Fund Grant.
The Northern Nevada Literacy Council will use the 2019 Community Fund grant to buy STEM books and supplies. The Family Reading Program is a successful and unique inter-generational literacy project that began in 2015 and has grown to reach families across Northern Nevada through community building and collaborations. The long term goal is to ensure that Northern Nevada third graders are literacy proficient. A key to reaching this goal is to provide individual libraries for kids...i.e. give kids their own books. Studies show that when children have their own books their reading performance improves in the following ways:
- Children read more and for longer lengths of time.
- Improved attitudes toward reading and learning among children.
- Children who live in print-rich environments and who are read to during the first years of life are much more likely to learn to read on schedule.
The immediate goal is working as a part of the Grade-Level Reading Coalition to meet the goal that 75% of those third graders are literacy proficient by 2020. Back to Community Fund Grants
