#Giving Tuesday - Give Local December 3
Have you decorated for Christmas yet? Finished your shopping? Yesterday was Black Friday, and the day after, today if you’re reading this column on Saturday, is Small Business Saturday. Perhaps you’re reading this on Monday, which has become known as Cyber Monday.
All of these “campaigns” are to encourage us to Buy! Buy! Buy! And we sure do.
I’ve been gratified to hear advertisements about Giving Tuesday, on December 3rd. Giving Tuesday started in 2012; this day is a reminder that the holidays are not all about consuming. They are and should be about helping each other - about giving! Along with many other laudable attributes, the United States is known for our tradition of generosity. There are more charities in the USA than any other country in the world, and these charities provide critical services to those in need. Thanks to you, and me, and so many other givers, we have resources in our region than would not otherwise exist. Please join with me and show your gratitude by giving this #GivingTuesday.
Give Local
Many of the advertisements you will hear and see are promoting national charities. The large national charities have well-honed fundraising departments and reap rewards through many donations, but I would urge you to give local this holiday season. Northern Nevada charities can be easily found by googling their names or checking on https://www.givingtuesday.org/whats-happening-near-me. Most of them have websites with “click to donate” buttons. You are welcome to visit the Community Foundation’s Nonprofit Connections pages which links to many organizations, all local, and read about the needs they serve. Local charities depend upon you during the giving season. This is the time of year when they receive most of the donations that sustain their work all year, and that’s important to remember. Their work continues month in and month out. Even though most of us think about giving around the holidays, need isn’t tied to the holidays or any particular season. Community Foundation grants are distributed throughout the year. The Community Foundation cares about local philanthropy and we know the many local needs. By giving locally, you will make a difference you and your family can see and feel. As you’re making your Christmas shopping list, please list a few charities that you wish to give to, and please make #GivingTuesday one of your most meaningful and joyful days of gift shopping. If you are interested in opening a donor advised fund before the end of the year and making a tax-wise strategic giving plan, give me a call. I look forward to talking with you.
