Three Students, Three Dreams, One Community Behind Them

A scholarship can help cover tuition, but its impact often extends far beyond the balance due. It can arrive at the exact moment a student needs reassurance, help a family breathe a little easier, or give someone returning to school the confidence to start again. For Abigail Rodriquez, AlexZandar Sheldon-Davis, and Meredith Clancy, scholarship support is helping turn deeply personal goals into achievable plans.

In 2026, the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada awarded nearly 400 scholarships totaling $1,411,979 through 43 charitable funds. Fifty-two percent of this year's recipients are first-generation students. These numbers show the program's reach; the stories behind them show what that support truly means.

Abigail Rodriguez: Creating Opportunity Through Food

At 10 years old, Abigail Rodriguez had a clear plan: follow in her father's footsteps, study mechanical engineering, and eventually pursue aerospace engineering. That plan changed during her freshman year, when an elective course in World Cuisines introduced her to an industrial kitchen. 

“Every day I stepped into that kitchen, I never felt the urge to be anywhere else.”

Choosing a different future required courage. Abigail drew inspiration from her mother, who immigrated to the United States from Mexico and showed her what it means to pursue something bigger despite uncertainty. This fall, Abigail will study culinary arts at the Culinary Institute of America in St. Helena, California. After earning her associate degree, she plans to continue at the institute's New York campus to earn a bachelor's degree in food business management. Her long-term dream is to open both a fine-dining restaurant and a French bistro.

The scholarship arrived at a pivotal moment. Just a day earlier, Abigail and her parents discussed whether tuition costs might force her to choose another school. Already juggling school, work, culinary responsibilities, and scholarship applications, she was determined yet overwhelmed. The award brought relief and a renewed sense that her goal was within reach.

Abigail's vision extends beyond owning restaurants. In high school, she created a program that donated leftover food and prepared meals from her culinary program to the Eddy House, which serves young people experiencing homelessness in Northern Nevada. She said her goal was to "help feed one heart at a time." She hopes to continue using food not only as a career but also to care for her community.

AlexZandar Sheldon-Davis: Protecting Communities Through Accountability

AlexZandar Sheldon-Davis recently graduated from Oasis Academy with both a high school diploma and an Associate of Arts degree earned through dual enrollment. During high school, AlexZandar completed more than 1,000 hours of community service through projects supporting his school, local organizations, Scouting, and the Fallon community. He also earned the rank of Eagle Scout, an achievement that strengthened his leadership, perseverance, and commitment to helping others.

This fall, AlexZandar will attend the University of Nevada, Reno, where he plans to prepare for a career in forensic accounting. His ultimate goal is to work for the FBI. That ambition grew out of a difficult experience: witnessing the effects of financial theft in his Scout troop. Seeing how misconduct can harm an organization and the people who trust it inspired him to learn how financial crimes are investigated, prevented, and prosecuted.

AlexZandar hopes to use his education to uncover fraud, protect organizations and communities, and promote accountability and transparency. Scholarship support will reduce the financial burden of college and allow him to focus on his studies, community involvement, and career preparation.

Meredith Clancy: Returning to a Calling

Meredith Clancy first considered nursing at 17, after her father suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage from a brain aneurysm. He survived but became a quadriplegic, and her family spent years in and out of hospitals as they adjusted to a new reality. Throughout that experience, the nurses stood out to her. Their compassion, steadiness, and dedication left a lasting impression.

Life ultimately led Meredith in another direction, and she spent 15 years in supply chain and procurement. After her father passed away last year, she found herself at a crossroads and knew it was time to return to the path she had once considered.

Now 40, Meredith is a pre-nursing student at Truckee Meadows Community College. She is completing her Certified Nursing Assistant training this summer and working toward applying to the Fall 2027 nursing cohort. Returning to school while balancing classes, clinicals, two young children, and a husband who travels frequently has not been easy. Receiving the Smith Family Scholarship reminds her that others believe in her dream, too.

Meredith hopes to become the kind of nurse who brings comfort and stability to patients and families during their most vulnerable moments, the same qualities that meant so much to her own family. 

“Sometimes the path we are meant for waits patiently until we are ready.”

The Generosity Behind Every Scholarship

Abigail, AlexZandar, and Meredith are pursuing very different careers, yet their stories share a common thread: each scholarship invites them to keep going. It gives students room to focus, encouragement when uncertainty feels overwhelming, and the knowledge that someone in their community believes in their potential.

Generous donors make these opportunities possible by investing in students and the futures they are building. Their support extends far beyond a single semester or degree. It will be felt in the meals Abigail serves, the organizations AlexZandar protects, and the patients Meredith comforts.
