To address our strategic area of focus in Building Nonprofit Capacity, the Community Foundation has been engaged in a Nonprofit Capacity Landscape Analysis to enhance our understanding of the organizational capacities of nonprofits within Washoe County.

As Northern Nevadans continue to be challenged to find affordable housing, the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada has received a $31,500 grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation to help provide a solution to this critical community issue.

According to news sources, as of this morning, more than 120 people have died and over 2 million homes and businesses remain without power across six states in the southeastern United States as a result of destruction caused by Hurricane Helene. Many more people are missing and officials fear the death toll may rise in the coming days.

According to the Reno Gazette-Journal, the Davis Fire, which began Saturday at the Davis Creek Campground in Washoe Valley, has grown to around 4,700 acres and has destroyed over a dozen structures. Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has declared a State of Emergency, evacuation orders remain in place for several communities, and Washoe County School District canceled classes on Monday, while thousands of residents remain without power. Many are looking for ways to help.

In July 2021, the Dixie Fire spread through Northeastern California. The fire consumed homes and businesses across five California counties and into the Sierras, burning nearly one million acres. The fire displaced residents and destroyed buildings, but a sense of community remained. 

Each year a generous donor gifts $10,000 to be granted to local nonprofits through the High School Giving Circle (HSGC). The HSGC serves to bring students together who want to support their community by learning and practicing philanthropy. Participating in the program is more than another activity to add to their resume, and it means a chance to make a difference in their community.

On Friday, January 28, one era ended, and a new one began. Longtime Community Foundation President and CEO Chris Askin retired after nearly 22 years. As the search is underway to name a successor in the coming weeks, there is so much to be excited about. We are well positioned financially, in our resources, and most importantly, in the commitment of our skilled and talented people. 

Since joining the Community Foundation as its sole staff member on June 15, 2000, helping design, envision, grow, develop, and build the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada has been the honor of my life. This will be my last week and my last column. I see nothing but the most amazing future for the Foundation, for the Community, and for the Askins as well.

With the new year already off to a great start, I’m very pleased to share that last year was amazing and impactful for philanthropy in our community – a link in our strong chain of growth. Here are a few highlights from the year just past, along with an advance glimpse ahead at 2022 for giving, granting, growth, and impact.

In honor of the New Year, here are some reflections and aspirations from our team at the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada. We wish you all the best in 2022!

We bring our time and treasure together to serve the people of our region. It is what fuels our drive and determination. For the Community Foundation, that is the true meaning of Christmas and the holidays.

From time to time, people question why the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada talks about how large our assets have become. It’s for good reason. Asset size is an easy and accurate way of conveying how our growth helps make our community stronger and better.

Like many areas of the country, our region is experiencing shortages in affordable housing. The Community Foundation is working to create innovative solutions, including homeownership, through our Community Housing Land Trust.

The Fall 2021 edition of the Family Estate Planning Series just wrapped up, and surveys continue to reflect the power and popularity of the program as we prepare for the next round in the spring. It is co-presented by the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada and PBS Reno, with the invaluable support of more than a dozen nonprofit sponsors.

Thanksgiving is the traditional start of the holiday season. Here are a few ideas to help extend that grateful spirit throughout the holidays by "giving back," which is what philanthropy is all about.

Just days away now, December is a great time to think about charitable needs and to make charitable gifts that provide financial benefits back to the donor. The Community Foundation partners with hundreds of families in incorporating these strategies and has the resources and structure to help families with tax-wise gifts of any size or type.

Financial and life goals, coupled with a passion for a cause, often motivate people to look into their assets to find something they can turn into charitable dollars. The Community Foundation explores solutions together to help make the most of their gifts. One example is called the “Zero Tax Sale.” 

The Pandemic had a major impact on charitable giving by affluent families. Through a study conducted by the Lilly School of Philanthropy, we can see what those changes were and how they are reshaping the landscape of philanthropy and charitable giving.

Planned gifts require more planning, negotiation, and counsel than many other gifts, and are associated with a number of state and federal tax benefits. Several "realities" highlight why it is important for individuals and professional advisors to talk about planned giving.

Charitable giving can and does include the use of insurance products, and the Community Foundation has experience in establishing and maintaining these types of gifts.

Each year, the Community Foundation's 100% Giving Board Award recognizes those nonprofit organizations for having each of their board members financially support that organization’s work in the region. These stellar organizations are well governed by boards whose members lead by example. While this year’s Nov. 1 deadline is fast approaching, there is still time for your nonprofit to become part of the 2021 program.

What are known as Donor-Advised Funds are popular because they don't require a tremendous amount of money yet offer tax advantages to everyone. People with wealth find these funds are less expensive and require less administration compared to setting up a private foundation. There are key advantages of setting up your Donor-Advised Fund through the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada – advantages you won’t find through commercial funds or national charities. Over many years, the Community Foundation has developed tools to ensure our organization's good health, akin to a person who completes a physical exam. Tools also exist for assessing the performance of charities, whether as a donor, professional advisor, or nonprofit operator. The Community Foundation's Philanthropic Services staff performs similar physicals on dozens of charities each year as part of our due diligence for the grant process.

After nearly 22 years leading the Community Foundation, President and CEO Chris Askin will retire Jan. 28, 2022. The search for his successor is underway. The Community Foundation of Northern Nevada is in great hands with the teamwork of its 11-person staff, dynamic Professional Advisors Council, and dedicated members within the Board, committees, and Ambassadors. The entire Community Foundation team will continue to make our community better for generations to come.

Selling a business or investment property all too often results in needlessly giving money away to the government, especially when charitable giving is a goal. The Community Foundation can combine such transactions with funding a charitable trust, establishing a family foundation or a scholarship fund, and many other ideas. For those who visit with us, we can help them achieve philanthropic goals and often significantly limit their capital gains tax.

While the reach and profile of the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada have grown year by year, many in our community are still not aware all that we offer. We continue to enlist your help in getting the word out about the depth, breadth and value of services we provide. Plus a special 9/11 note of remembrance.

The Moonridge Group based in Las Vegas will hold its annual Philanthropy Leaders’ Summit on Friday, September 17, 8:30 -11:30 a.m. The event this year is virtual and highly recommended for fundholders and those wanting to learn about the world of philanthropic giving. The Community Foundation of Northern Nevada has helped support this event to educate and engage an ever-growing audience in philanthropy.

Philanthropic services offered at the Community Foundation can help you learn more about your charitable interests. We help people figure out if they want to concentrate their philanthropy on a focus area or restrict it to a single project or program as part of their overall estate plan. We also work with donors to give to charity, AND provide an income stream to their heirs.

A Charitable Lead Trust is a wonderful tool to help pass along wealth and teach about philanthropy. How much you put in the lead trust, and for how many years, can be part of your estate planning. It can help you limit taxes and pass along as much as possible to your heirs to improve the quality of their lives as well.

The Community Foundation of Northern Nevada is privileged to have some 60 attorneys, CPAs, financial advisors, and other advisors listed among our Professional Advisor Council (PAC). These individuals are instrumental to connecting tax-wise and charitably minded clients to the resources and abilities of the Community Foundation. More than half of the gifts received through the Community Foundation are from Professional Advisor referrals. Our team is grateful for our region's many, valued Professional Advisors.

Donor Advised Funds offer many benefits: You don't have to make large gifts, you can add to the fund anytime, and there are tax advantages. And, our helpful experts at the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada are here to assist you in setting up the fund. For these and other reasons, many people find the popular funds to be the right choice for them as individuals, for their families, or for their business. 

Today’s community foundations are similar in many ways, and it is no accident. Thanks to a national effort by the Council on Foundations two decades ago, the level of services, and operating structure, of community foundations across the country was greatly improved. The adoption of national standards by most foundations was the change that made this happen. The Community Foundation of Northern Nevada transcends national standards in our services, systems, and operations.

The Community Foundation has many advantages when it comes to charitable gift planning. Privacy is especially noteworthy. We meticulously take steps at every stage to ensure the complete privacy and absolute confidentiality in our relationships with donors and fundholders. Total privacy is a key reason we have become so trusted for more than two decades, not only by the people who give to and through the Foundation, but with their professional advisors as well.

Each of us is unique in how we approach charitable giving. Informed, thoughtful consideration can help you have a much more meaningful experience from charitable giving. Here are some questions and considerations to help bring about a great deal of satisfaction and positive feelings associated with giving.

Planning is underway for the 2021 edition the Community Foundation’s Shareholders’ Gathering this fall. The event is held for those individuals who have personally invested in the Community Foundation, through a gift, establishing a Fund, setting up estate gift “legacy” arrangements, or through the referral of a client.
