The Community Foundation offers as a resource, the following list of national and Nevada nonprofit organizations working for social justice. As a service to our region, to encourage philanthropy, and address racism, the nonprofits below have been vetted by the Community Foundation.
Download and Print List ACLU of Nevada Foundation The ACLU of Nevada is a nonpartisan organization committed to the defense and advancement of civil liberties and civil rights for all people in Nevada. Grounded in the principles of liberty, justice, democracy, and equality, we engage in litigation, education, and advocacy on behalf of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Issues addressed include Criminal Justice Reform, Education, Free Speech, Immigrants’ Rights, LGBTQ Rights, and Unsheltered Nevadans. ACTIONN ACTIONN (Acting in Community Together in Organizing Northern Nevada) is a grassroots & non-partisan organization that fights for racial and economic justice in Northern Nevada by engaging faith communities and other stakeholders in community organizing, advocacy, and civic engagement. Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada (PLAN) PLAN’s mission is to build collective strategic action among coalition partners in order to deepen democracy and achieve greater social justice in Nevada. PLAN uses research, public education, leadership development, and grassroots organizing to build power and create more humane solutions to Nevada’s problem. Their work includes civic engagement, economic justice, environmental justice, immigration, justice initiatives, native organizing, and publications, and research. PLAN is currently seeking support for their bail programs for Reno, Las Vegas, and surrounding areas to help pay bail and fees, connect to legal support, and provide additional resources. Silver State Fair Housing Council Silver State Fair Housing Council works to ensure equal housing opportunities for all residents of Nevada. Specifically, SSFHC advocates for fair housing by providing a comprehensive program of outreach, education, and enforcement opportunities. By addressing the needs of housing consumers, housing providers, and local governments, SSFHC works to break down barriers to equal housing opportunity and build opportunities for community members to relate to each other as neighbors. University of Nevada, Reno- Office of Diversity & Inclusion The Office of Diversity and Inclusion represents the University's commitment to realize and sustain a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all University community members, including students, faculty, faculty colleagues, and alumni. Initiatives include working with diversity committees, providing diversity education, and offering campus resources. NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. is America’s premier legal organization fighting for racial justice. Through litigation, advocacy, and public education, LDF seeks structural changes to expand democracy, eliminate disparities, and achieve racial justice in a society that fulfills the promise of equality for all Americans. LDF also defends the gains and protections won over the past 75 years of civil rights struggle and works to improve the quality and diversity of judicial and executive appointments. NAACP Empowerment Programs NAACP Empowerment Programs engage primarily in training, education, and advocacy at the national and local levels. Your gift will help us continue working toward our mission of ensuring the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination. Southern Poverty Law Center Southern Poverty Law Center is dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Using litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy, the SPLC works toward the day when the ideals of equal justice and equal opportunity will be a reality. Issues addressed include Hate & Extremism, Children’s Rights, Immigrant Rights, LGBTQI Rights, Economic Justice, Criminal Justice Reform, and Voting Rights. Campaign Zero Campaign Zero supports the analysis of policing practices across the country, research to identify effective solutions to end police violence, technical assistance to organizers leading police accountability campaigns and the development of model legislation and advocacy to end police violence nationwide. *Note: donations are made through WeTheProtestors, Inc., a qualified 501c3 nonprofit, whose mission is “Identifying solutions, providing research & data to organizers and policymakers, advocating to end police violence nationwide.” Advancement Project Advancement Project is rooted in the great human rights struggles for equality and justice, we exist to fulfill America's promise of a caring, inclusive, and just democracy. National programs focus on tackling inequity with innovative strategies and strong community alliance. California programs engineer large-scale systems change to remedy inequality, expand opportunity, and open paths to upward mobility. Black Lives Matter Donations will support the BLM movement and the ongoing fight to end State-sanctioned violence, liberate Black people, and end white supremacy forever. Thousand Currents Thousand Currents funds grassroots groups and movements led by women, youth, and Indigenous Peoples in the Global South. Their programs include food sovereignty, alternative economies, and climate justice. Through their Philanthropic Partnerships program, Thousand Currents works with donors and impact investors to adopt transformative practices that can dismantle injustice and inequity; their Collaborative Initiatives include Black Lives Matter, Buen Vivir Fund, and CLIMA Fund.
