John Marshall Erickson Fund

John Marshall Erickson M.D. | July 4, 1950 – January 14, 2023

John was a passionate OBGYN and dedicated his life to improving the health and lives of women while also bringing thousands of beautiful new babies into the world. John was born and raised in Reno and was a proud pillar in the medical community for over 40 years. After completing his residency, John moved back to Reno in 1980 and joined Ob/Gyn Associates. He specialized in pelvic floor reconstruction, endometriosis, genetic testing and was a leader in pioneering robotic surgery in the Reno/Tahoe area. When he joined Ob/Gyn Associates, he was one of two partners. Over his career, he helped recruit new physicians who held the same standard of care and today, Ob/Gyn Associates operates with 15 partners and is a leader in women’s health care in the Northern Nevada region. John is remembered by his patients and colleagues as having an empathetic demeanor, calming presence, comforting aura, and infectious smile. The Reno City Council and Mayor Hillary Schieve declared Thursday, October 18, 2018, John Erickson Day honoring his dedication and service to the Reno community. In addition, the Obstetrical Family Waiting Room at Renown Medical Center was named for him because of his long-standing support and promotion of the Obstetrical unit for the facility.

John was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of his neck and throat in early 2018 and might be linked to his treatment of patients with HPV. His cancer was HPV related and early in his career, patients were treated in a way that may have exposed him unknowingly to the HPV virus.

In late 2021, his disease had metastasized to stage 4 lung cancer, and after a courageous 13-month battle, the disease proved to be too strong a foe, and John peacefully passed with his loving wife Sue and loyal son RJ by his side.

Aside from being a remarkable physician, John was a devoted friend and family man. He was a hunter, a sailor, a swimmer, and an award-winning landscaper. He will always be remembered as being a genuine, kindhearted, quick-witted and humbly selfless man who enjoyed sharing laughs and memories with his closest friends and loved ones.
