You may have seen the Village on Sage Street in the news this week. Reporters were happy to be able to tour the interiors and could see the flurry of construction as they parked and walked around newly poured sidewalks and carefully passed arriving trucks loaded with trees to be planted. We invited the media to the Village on Sage this Wednesday to spread the word to prospective low-income residents that they need to sign up now online at http://www.voa-ncnn.org/sagestreet. The VOA will begin contacting people next week and we expect they can move in mid-July. Imagine! 220 people will have a stable, safe, and comfortable place to live for a monthly rent of $400. This is real progress for Reno and Sparks.
I would like to invite you, too, to tour the Village with me. Please call Michelle Duggan at 775-333-5499 to schedule a time for you to visit. I know you will be impressed and excited to see for yourself this one-of-a-kind community come together. The project budget is $9 million for a self-sustaining – not subsidized housing – community that will equal 10% of Reno’s low-income housing.
We are grateful for recent generous gifts from donors including the Satre Family Fund, Thomas P. Raley Foundation, the NV Energy Foundation, and the Marie Crowley Foundation that have helped tremendously with construction completion expenses. Thank you as well to the realtors from Dickson Realty who are contributing toward the purchase of beautiful wall art that will be displayed in the dorm hallways and common rooms. Your thoughtfulness will help the residents feel proud of their community and give them a lift every day.
As I have said before, it takes a community to build this Village. We need to raise $3 million. Your contribution of cash, stock or appreciated property will help hard-working people employed full-time earning $9 an hour afford their own bedroom with a door they can lock behind them. No longer sleeping in their cars or in the shelter, this privacy and security will help reduce their stress and allow them to make and reach life improvement goals.
Call me to discuss ways you can help. It is an ambitious goal which, with your contribution, we can achieve together.
