STEM Learning is Critical for an Educated Nevada Workforce.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Curriculum for Elementary Students  from  Great Basin Institute and Sierra Nevada Journeys and the Discovery Museum was supported with four Partnership Grants. This emphasis on elementary  education shows the serious commitment by the Community Foundation selection committee to a future Nevadan population. These organizations are committed to improving WCSD students STEM education by offering outdoor school camp experiences - Sierra Nevada Journeys;  day trips to explore and learn in Galena Forest - Great Basin Institute. The Discovery Museum will augment local STEM education for 5th through 8th graders with their inter-active gallery, Inside Out; An Anatomy Experience. Inside Out is a new 2,500-square-foot gallery that will contain 27 hands-on and digital inter-actives. Of these, four full-body inter-actives will help visitors experience both collaborative and intimate moments within the gallery: Heartbeat Wall; Height Wall; Sensory Chamber & Loft; and Skeleton Marionette. Four Digital Organ Explorers will feature a bone-white organ sculpture with an iPad highlighting augmented reality technology rotating around models of the Brain/Nervous System; Female Reproductive System; Gastrointestinal System; and Heart. 19 artifacts connect visitors to similarities and differences in our bodies, and a Gross Art Gallery adds creativity to the exhibits. The gallery is expected to open within the next year.
