Sergeant George D. Sullivan 1954-1998
University of Nevada, Reno Police Sergeant George D. Sullivan was killed in the line of duty in the early morning hours of January 13, 1998. He had been with the University Police Department for 19 years. He was survived by his wife and five children.
The University Police Services Sullivan Memorial Fund supports the department Honor Guard and provides support for fallen officer activities, events, and families in our region. The University Police are painfully aware of the dangers faced by the men and women in law enforcement in our community, and understand first-hand the devastating impact of losing a colleague and friend in a line of duty death.
Sergeant George Sullivan’s death was a shocking reminder to the entire community that, no matter the assignment, men, and women in uniform put their lives on the line to protect the people that they serve. The University of Nevada Police will never forget George, nor his sacrifice. His family will always be part of their law enforcement family. And they will stand with law enforcement partners in Northern Nevada whenever a line of duty death occurs.
The University Police Honor Guard provides team members for numerous events, memorials, and ceremonies throughout the region. We also partner with and support the Northern Nevada Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors (NNCOPS).
In addition, University Police have a firmly rooted belief in the philosophy of Community Oriented Policing. The department falls under the umbrella of the Nevada System of Higher Education and its officers believe that they have a duty to teach citizens how to prevent crime and improve personal safety. Some of the best and most requested programs include:
- Risk Assessment/Workplace Violence Prevention
- Personal Safety and Women’s Self Defense Classes
