Housing Project Rendering (002)

Demand for Affordable Housing is a crisis. Rents have risen more than 50%; pushing low-income and elderly residents out. Homelessness is rapidly increasing.

The community of Reno has a rare opportunity to acquire 200 modular dorm housing units at a fraction of their original price to provide more affordable housing.  $3 Million is needed by July 31 to move the dorms to Reno from Wyoming.  Pitch In! Here is your chance to do something big for Reno.  Every contribution counts and will help a hard-working person have a home by the holidays.

Dorms on Sage Street Presentation updated June 24, 2018

Join the public/private/social partnership that is working to buy and move the modular dorm units to Reno where they will be installed in a comfortable, secure manner and the run by an experienced nonprofit. Rent for a private dorm room will be $400 a month.

  • The City of Reno is donating 5 acres of land on Sage Street to the Community Foundation Housing Land Trust to be used exclusively for affordable housing.
  • Volunteers of America will operate the housing project.
  • Private developers, contractors, businesses, EDAWN, Community Foundation donors, and generous community members are giving together to make this happen

The Dorms on Sage Street are long, narrow, modular structures like those used by FEMA, mining and construction projects. Dorm structures hold 40 private rooms with locking door, operable window, desk, bed, closet, and resident controlled HVAC. There are shared bathrooms in each wing.

The entire site will be attractively fenced and landscaped and include a commercial kitchen unit, community gathering room, laundry, gym, business services, meeting rooms, a fire pit, pet area and plenty of parking.

A Hand Up.  Our goal for the Dorms on Sage is that this bridge housing is a hand up, not a handout or a profit maker. A person earning $9 an hour will be able to afford the $400 monthly rent and achieve savings goals. All residents will be provided financial counseling.

Project costs, maps, photos, and details can be found in the Dorms on Sage Street Presentation.

The Dorms on Sage Street project is a transitional housing option for low-income workers.

You can give in a variety of ways. Contribute services, write a check to CHLT (Community Housing Land Trust), or donate online with a credit card through the button above.  Call Chris Askin 775-333-5499 to discuss charitable gift options for larger gifts.

We must raise $3 million by July 31, 2018, to create truly affordable housing for 200 people in Reno!
