Do We Need Evidence that Programs to Help People are Working?

The simple answer to this is yes, and increasingly so.  For the past several years funders from large national private foundations to government funders have begun to insist that evidence based programs and practices be followed by charities.  A few years ago the Community Foundation joined with other local charities to pursue Federal funding and at that time we did not have enough evidenced based local programming to be competitive in securing the grant.  We recently had the same opportunity, and upon discovering that as a group we had made little progress using evidenced based programs and practices, have begun to meet to address this shortfall.  Our goal is simple… to not only improve the effectiveness of local programs, but to be able to access funding at the regional and national level to increase important programs.  Ultimately, this will improve the quality of life for all of us.  After listening to three presentations  from local PhD’s who are experts in evidenced based programming and practices the group is building a good understanding of the steps to take to utilize these important program design, evaluation, and improvement strategies.  If you’d like to learn more or join the group, please contact Tracy Turner, Chief Philanthropy Officer at tturner@nevadafund.org.A quick reminder that this coming Thursday, May 1, the Community Foundation will be holding a seminar about the Affordable Care Act and health care reform.  This two-hour CLE and CEU credit event is being held at the State Bar of Nevada on May 1st, from 2-5pm.  To register please call our office at 775- 333-5499 or email Lyndsey Crossley at our office at lcrossley@nevadafund.org.We are privileged to be your Community Foundation, and whether you are a donor, a grant recipient, a service provider, or a professional advisor, we appreciate your help in spreading the word about our work and ability to help make philanthropy have a  meaningful impact on people’s lives.
