You’N-I is a community initiative addressing the needs of youth who are homeless, runaways, or aging out of foster care.Launched in 2014, You’N-I gathers a broad range of caring people to have a conversation about existing services for struggling youth, their needs and ways we can help.
We listen and try to make sure every voice is heard. You’N-I began with two public convenings, engaging leaders in nonprofit organizations, the school district, government agencies, and most importantly, youth themselves to get a full understanding of the issues affecting struggling youth.
About Youth Homelessness
Homelessness is defined as “individuals who lack a fixed,
regular, and adequate nighttime residence.”
Based on this definition, the Washoe County School District identified 3550 students who were homeless
during the 2014-2015 school year.
Accurately counting how many youths are living on the streets can be difficult as many spend nights in motels or friend’s couches and tend to blend in a regular your people. While the 2015 Point in Time Count identified 59 youth who were literally homeless, that number is jus a snapshot. The YOUth Resouce Center, a drop-in center for youth in downtown Reno, has assisted 591 unique youth since their opening in March 2015.
Though the numbers are scattered, the needs of struggling youth that were identified through You’N-I were consistent. It is difficult to find resources for struggling youth. They also need a central location to receive support. Additionally, youth explained they would value having a mentor in their life. The Community Foundation worked fundholders and community members to develop the above solutions.
Evaluating the Impact of You’N-I
From February – June 2016, the Community Foundation conducted a comprehensive evaluation of You’N-I. This report contains results from that evaluation and is designed to gauge initial and long-term successes and failures of You’N-I. It may also guide future Community Foundation initiatives or other community efforts to help youth who are homeless. The report includes data collected via surveys, interviews, and internal evaluation methods from a variety of service providers.
